JK Studios.

Finally getting things back around to some semblence of ‘normal’ around here.

At some point just after halloween, I got to talking to a friend of mine who had recently begun JK Studio. Now, he may not think himself as the halloween type, but I personally beg to differ.

So, we got to talking. I’m always at a rush to make a mask just in time for Halloween…would he be interested in making one for me?

(and Talia has been talking about being a “Bob” for halloween ever since we got this one from them)

So, that meant we needed a copy of my face…

Being claustrophobic, that’s always…”fun”.

And, we had to do it twice since the first one got messed up. But, finally…

Did one of Kyle as well, to give them more bases to work off for their masks in general.

With those shipped off, we have moved on to my own projects.

I just couldn’t get those Transi tombs out of my head, so we’re going to make one ourselves.

Masks, contest, pumpkins, preseason, and a Ouija board.

Busy, busy.

Mask update on Kyle. We have the basics down, gotta get some painting and details in on it.

From 2011 buildup

Perfect fit (I would hope so), split up the rear for easy on/off. Top and sides left breathable, huge opening for the nose and mouth. Tried to remove all the things that make a mask uncomfortable, but otherwise an update of his from last year:

From The Harvest

Not sure whether we’ll get one in for me or not. I kinda want to, but also dread it, some of you may recall I get rather claustrophobic in masks…

Finished up my entry for the Guild Wars Art Contest with a little editting help from my wife. I don’t have the editted version online, but here’s the base pic.

From Guild wars Halloween contest 2011

My uncle lets me know the pumpkins are ready to pick.

From 2011 buildup

We’ve already been to another uncle’s to grab the corn…beginning the official preseason display.
(sorry didn’t feel like breaking out the tripod)

From 2011 buildup

there’s something simple and creepy about just the light coming through the corn, however.

From 2011 buildup

Add a little fog, I might have to find a way of using that…

Talia’s impression of the corn: “Let’s go in and find our way out again!” If only I had that much room…

Finally, I got word of an attempt to make the largest ouija board session Halloween night. If you’re into that kind of thing, check it out: http://www.ouijaexperiment.com/

A little history in the masks…

Going through some older pictures. How the masks have changed.

The Scavenger Years

These are the years prior to me meeting Emily at work. So, unfortunately, they do not have witty names. (Emily, care to retroactively name some?)

To begin with, my masks were more scavange than anything else. The first year I used it, I just threw the bare bone on, and wandered my parent’s neighborhood. Had a couple of kids terrified, telling their grandmother some ‘8 ft tall monster’ had been chasing them. And they both utterly broke down all semblence of reasoning when I came walking in the front door. See, they thought they were safe in grandma’s house. Didn’t realize I knew her as the school librarian from elementary school, as well as a neighbor. Grandma found it most humorous after I took off the mask, too.

In proof that a bunch of guys out ‘hunting’ is just a recipe for wierd stuff to be created, here is my dad modeling that first ‘mask’.

We also had another design in mind for the thing up there around that campfire. I’ll let dad do the honors again.

I really have no idea what that second bone is. The main one is a cow’s pelvis. Opted for the first design because I couldn’t figure out how to keep the second one on that first year.

Couple years later, we moved into the house, and I had to whip something up in a couple months. So, a little glue a little wig, a little paint, and we made the original Witch Doctor Mask.

It was comfortable, if a little hot. Can’t say much about the rest of the costume. I was modelling it after an actual Zulu medicine man. But, of course, didn’t have the fur for my chest, and wasn’t about to try to sew it properly, so we bought some faux fir and cut a hole in the center. Being the idiot I am, didn’t think “hey, black won’t show up on your black underclothes”. The leggings were inspired. Real ones being made of Lion’s hair, I was rummaging through Joanns and saw this fuzzy yarn. Lion’s Mane brand. I took it as a sign, and those are still in use today.

The Modification Experiment

Still no Emily, so, yet another without a name…

The following year, I wanted to make a REALLY GOOD mask. Semi looking at Temple of Doom for inspiration, I procured a Steer Skull, hacked it apart, hollowed it out and went about making it fit my head. Sculpting where I needed to make it look right. You can see the whole process by clicking on the “Halloween 2005” slideshow to the right there.

Then I got sidetracked, and started studying some Mayan religion. It kinda morphed into a Mayan-inspired design somewhere in the middle.

Little known thing is that I had actually considered making this altar in the middle of the yard that year. PUMPING tons of blood over it with a reciprocating fountain, and having the corn stalks coming out of the bottom of it. I still LOVE the idea, and it fits perfectly with the mayan paintings that gave me the idea. However…it was scrapped as being a little too much for the kids. And I did a little half-assed offering place on the corn stalks that no one likely noticed.

Still, the mask turned out great. Even if it was WAY TOO HEAVY.

The “Cole cannot carve” experiment.

Emily has termed this one “The Predator”.

After wearing the above beast, the primary concern for 2006 was WEIGHT. I wanted it LIGHT!!!

And, as the powergrab had worked so well, I had this idea to carve some of that green foam stuff from the fake flower section of the craft store, and just coat it with a little power grab.

I can’t carve…ok, I admit it.

Add to that the green crap crumbled up and tossed grains everywhere, then the power grab had nothing to bite into as the foam would just disintigrate when you tried to touch it, it’s a miracle this thing even came into existance at all. It was SUPPOSED to look like a baboon skull. Instead, it’s just an embarrassment.

The “Cole CAN sculpt” experiment.

Hmmm…I don’t remember if you ever named this one Emily?

2007, I HAD to make a new mask after that abomination in 2006. So, it was very early I had the design down. But, very late in the year before I actually finished.

Anyhow. A lot of people have guessed that this was inspired by the death eaters masks from Harry Potter. Not so in the least, though I did find it an amusing coincidence that those existed the same year I was making this.

Inspired by the holywood portrayal of a Bokor painting his face with a skull pattern, and a very brief glimpse of a skullish mask on the escorts to the blue opera singer lady in the Fifth Element, I set out to make a skull mask.

It went VERY smoothly and naturally. Applying the lessons learned from the crap in 2006. Little known trivia is that the teeth are actually real. The smaller ones are goat’s teeth. The larger, Water Buffalo. All inverted so the roots are showing. And yes, the lower jaw that didn’t work.

2008

Emily termed this one “Shrek” prior to it being green. (a part of the reason to go green, actually)

This year, making the mask is more a traditional experience than a need. In fact, if I can’t get the paint to my liking, it’ll end up as scarecrow fodder like all the old masks, and I’ll wear 2007’s again.

Inspired by Tiki masks, Aztec headdresses, and the original red one above, trying to mash them all together into something wierd. Still a work in progress for some time to go…

Thar be booty!

Another commercial has caught my attention lately.

Family grocery shopping, the mom mentions BBQ, and the dad races off to grab the sauce, son in the cart. They round a corner, the son picks up some paper towels on the way, and the father shouts “YARRRR! Booty!!!”

No idea what brand of sauce the thing is for. But, it’s wonderfully entertaining. Almost as good as the one where the heart jumps out of the lady’s chest and stumbles down to the bosses office to quit.

Anyhow. We have booty!

First of all, Kyle finished off the schoolyear with the scholar dollar auction.

Selling skulls be profitable, it seems, as he made out fairly well, coming home with a nice poster of (fittingly) Jack Sparrow, and a grundle of toys.

And that’s not even counting all the junk food he ate over the sale days.

It’s been a curious little project. Among the course of making these little skulls, we came across a store who’s owner honestly wants to sell these things, and the full size ones, and the shrunken heads if I’m willing…for REAL. Interesting prospect. Bears some looking into.

And, it’s been a rough week in our personal life. This is not the place to go into detail on that, but as you’ll learn, I deal with rough spots by burying myself into making something for halloween. However, it happens to also be a rather slow patch right now in what I’m needing, and able, to actually do.

So, it was a blessing to come home from the movie Thursday night, and find a most wonderfull gift left on our porch with no explaination. A box full of skulls, and a bunch of staffs to put them on.

Now, clearly, they are a differing style than what I’ve been using. But, it doesn’t take long for my mind to come up with ways to factor them into the plans. And, as such I have a new project going just for these skulls. Just when needed.

It took me a moment to remember the discussion that led me to recall where they came from. However, the timing was truly inspired.

In other news. “Shrek”. My new mask. Not liking the painting job right now, but not much I can do till I get an airbrush.

To give you an idea of what’s going to happen after I get it painted right…(the skull won’t sit quite so high on the head there, it’s cut to fit, lower, but won’t stay without me gluing it on, which I can’t till it’s painted)

And, GROW little wierdo grass from Michigan!

Finally, Alec says ‘hi’.

Fire!

Ah…finally. A proper FIRE.

Stopped by Target last night, for I had been informed their gas firebowl had been knocked down 50%. We get there, and after tracking down the actual way to purchase the dang thing, (Target, you really need a better means of purchasing the big stuff)we were informed that they had none left. But, we were welcome to take the floor model and get ANOTHER 20% off.

Uh. YEAH! So, we walked out of Target with this $250 firebowl for $100.

Filling up the propane tank, and it lights right up, Jen and I sat around it under the gazebo talking late into the evening as the storms rolled in overhead. Something that will more than likely become a normal occurance. This thing will be getting quite the workout over the summer. Cooking smores, hot dogs, just giving atmosphere, whatever.

But, come Halloween, I now have a means to make a proper fire to dance around. It looked great from the far end of the yard. And, it provided me a chance to look at my stuff in firelight, make sure it’s looking good for the big night.

The shrunken heads look SO darn good under firelight. It’s just plain down right creepy.

My mask…I’m not happy with right now. I tried to paint it this weekend. Wanted it to be monochrome, but was avoiding the white/grey/black of the last 2 years. And, a co-worker who always comically names my masks has deemed this one “Shrek”. Green seemed to be a good choice. The idea was to have black on the low lying areas and the raised portions gradually move to a green. Didn’t work well, the whole thing is just green right now. And, in the firelight looked like utter crap to me as I couldn’t make out any of the details.

Jen’s saying that’s mostly due to my trouble seeing shades of colors to begin with and it looks fine. I don’t know what to do. Looking into getting an airbrush. Hopefully to touch up and get the original idea of black around the low lying areas to come out. And, even when painted completely, we’re only roughly 1/2 done with the thing. Plenty of surprises left on this mask. I know I’ve been neglecting my picture duties…promise some will get snapped soon.

And, with the fire pit. May as well try the green fire…

A little spray bottle makes a nice green puff that lingers just a bit. Jen has pictures of that. We’ll have to get them up when I can.

Soaking paper, letting it dry, and tossing it on didn’t do much. Next, gotta try some wood chips. Some way or another, I’ll be getting something I can toss on to add a little theatrics with some green fire.

And, pretty sure the new neighbors have moved in…

Either they had company last night, or it’s some kind of group purchase of the place. Someone was out working the BBQ anyway. Didn’t recognize them, but it was dark. Hmmm…Proper way to greet them…A gift of skulls? Maybe I should start working on Fred?
