Final thoughts on 2014.

Every year, I like to sit down and analyze what worked, and what didn’t.

This particular year, it was just a minor miracle we were able to do it at all. However, analyzing the new additions:

“The Orchard”, so coined in 2010 was a night and day improvement over the 2010 concept, but still not quite where I’d like it.

One teenager stopped to ask me at the entrance. “What is this, Mr Jones?”

It’s a rare treat to be compared to the nigh perfection that is Pumpkinrot’s works. Alas, I hadn’t watched Mr Jones until this past Saturday. I can kinda see where the teen was coming from in a very broad sense, both works meaning to imply something mystical being set up with the bones and sticks.

The Orchard was one of the few successes, and I’m determined to make it return in 2015, with more proper attention than we were able to give it this year.

Jim.

Jim was another project I started years ago and never finished. Representing my first foray into animation, I’m left unsure whether I will return to animation or not. When he was working it was a marvelous, almost magical thing. A neighbor girl on the 29th went down that corn tunnel (her brother stopping at the gate), encountered Jim, and come running right back out. It remains one of the funnier things of the year.

However, I believe in an attempt to figure out how it was working, someone went fiddling at some point during the party on the 30th, and Jim took a dive. By the time I found him, it was in such a state I knew repair would be impossible with the time and resources I had available. So, a half-working Jim was on for Halloween night. Don’t know whether I’m just not going to put out future animatronics till after the party, or just stick to static.

Jim did look ominous just sitting there waiting for someone to trigger his motion sensor.

The coffins.

They really weren’t my thing to begin with. They got me through a rough time, though, and kept me busy.

Missed opportunity to do up a whole old west graveyard with wooden crosses. Didn’t even cross my mind till it was too late. (I keep seeing the scene with Ned on display outside the bar from Unforgiven when I look at this. Poor Ned.”) Not a bad idea for a whole theme, really. Just, not my thing. They sold about 10 minutes after posting them…which was kind of the point of building them in the first place.

So, where does that leave us?

Well, I’m strongly considering a fresh start for 2015. Return to the most basic elements from 2010. Full on Harvest theme.

I also discovered my city has started a scarecrow contest. I think I might just have to follow a bit of Pumpkinrot’s example, and enter such a contest. I don’t know what won, but I only saw a bunch of smiling stuffed happiness on display. Can’t allow that to stand unchecked. Last time I went looking to make a scarecrow, I stumbled on the Chimera.

Now, how do I take my style there and translate it to a more traditional ‘scarecrow’ form?

Wrapping things up.

It’s only September and we’re mostly done with the goals I had set for the year. This is a first. Maybe I’ll have to build something else, maybe we’ll just have an easier fall, we’ll see what mood strikes me.

The kids helped me finish up our tombstones.

(prior to some finish painting with the kids)

Then I made a number of small items for the Halloween forum “Secret Reaper”. Couple new sculpts, some challenging for me. But, as it’s still a surprise, pics will have to wait, but here’s Talia’s interpretation of one of them.

The corn is done, the pumpkin plants are fading fast.

Oops.

Little accident.

Kyle dropped trevor and broke the lid.

Fortunately, we were able to save Trevor.

Just a few minor little cracks as he started to seperate from the base.

We’ve also started to get the tomb coated with protective coat.

In the process, we discovered a little springtime miracle.

Aint they cute?

well, a few might be…

thousands?

Got at least one pumpkin sprouting finally. Should be a Lumina, so hopefully we’ll get some variety this year. Otherwise the garden isn’t doing so great. Some of the corn’s coming up, not much yet. Have some volunteer pumpkins I need to transplant over if the others don’t start sprouting soon.

Final thoughts on 2011.

Updated the slideshow in the last post with all our pics.

Some final thoughts on 2011.

We’ve gotten a little too big for our own good. Had to form a queue line for the first time. This left me out front, and that meant only Kyle was working in the actual haunt. We officially need some help now. Need at least one more ‘scare’ place. I’m hesitant to go mechanical, as mechanics can’t adjust for little kids.

Placed a comment/suggestion book out for the first time. I’ve been wanting to do that for at least 3 years now. Many more people used it than I expected, and we sincerely thank everyone for the feedback.

Of the suggestions: Chainsaw, Freddy, Zombies, and Michael. Frankly, I think people can find enough of that stuff somewhere else. We’ll stick to more original stuff and atmosphere.

Equal parts “scary” and “make it more scary”. Since our goal always is “Have the little kids clinging to their parents but not up all night”, it’s a fine line, but one I think we’re treading fairly well.

This has been my favorite year, personally, even though I got stuck playing gatekeeper. Everything pretty much came out how I wanted, but would still have liked to finish the original plan on Kyle’s costume.

Time to pick it all up, and start begin the annual switch to Christmas mode. What’s in store for that? I’m not sure yet.

It’s also the research time of year for me. We’ve already settled on a theme. Chosen by the kids. “The Recondite.” I’ll leave you to guess the meaning of that for now, but will leave you that the name is a clue…

Back to basics.

Where the heck have I been?

My holiday vacation has been spent expanding on the overall theme of last year:

Back to the basics.

And, when you look at the problems faced last year, the two largest problems were the result of storage and workspace. Or lack thereof.

Thus it is that break has been spent clearing out, organizing, and improving our storage and our workspace, and we are not done yet.

The back to basics theme will continue to permeate our mindset throughout 2011. Our planned purchases for the year are all focused on improving and replacing basic items, and the Harvest, perhaps the most basic theme possibly, will be making a return showing as well.
