Final thoughts on 2014.

Every year, I like to sit down and analyze what worked, and what didn’t.

This particular year, it was just a minor miracle we were able to do it at all. However, analyzing the new additions:

“The Orchard”, so coined in 2010 was a night and day improvement over the 2010 concept, but still not quite where I’d like it.

One teenager stopped to ask me at the entrance. “What is this, Mr Jones?”

It’s a rare treat to be compared to the nigh perfection that is Pumpkinrot’s works. Alas, I hadn’t watched Mr Jones until this past Saturday. I can kinda see where the teen was coming from in a very broad sense, both works meaning to imply something mystical being set up with the bones and sticks.

The Orchard was one of the few successes, and I’m determined to make it return in 2015, with more proper attention than we were able to give it this year.

Jim.

Jim was another project I started years ago and never finished. Representing my first foray into animation, I’m left unsure whether I will return to animation or not. When he was working it was a marvelous, almost magical thing. A neighbor girl on the 29th went down that corn tunnel (her brother stopping at the gate), encountered Jim, and come running right back out. It remains one of the funnier things of the year.

However, I believe in an attempt to figure out how it was working, someone went fiddling at some point during the party on the 30th, and Jim took a dive. By the time I found him, it was in such a state I knew repair would be impossible with the time and resources I had available. So, a half-working Jim was on for Halloween night. Don’t know whether I’m just not going to put out future animatronics till after the party, or just stick to static.

Jim did look ominous just sitting there waiting for someone to trigger his motion sensor.

The coffins.

They really weren’t my thing to begin with. They got me through a rough time, though, and kept me busy.

Missed opportunity to do up a whole old west graveyard with wooden crosses. Didn’t even cross my mind till it was too late. (I keep seeing the scene with Ned on display outside the bar from Unforgiven when I look at this. Poor Ned.”) Not a bad idea for a whole theme, really. Just, not my thing. They sold about 10 minutes after posting them…which was kind of the point of building them in the first place.

So, where does that leave us?

Well, I’m strongly considering a fresh start for 2015. Return to the most basic elements from 2010. Full on Harvest theme.

I also discovered my city has started a scarecrow contest. I think I might just have to follow a bit of Pumpkinrot’s example, and enter such a contest. I don’t know what won, but I only saw a bunch of smiling stuffed happiness on display. Can’t allow that to stand unchecked. Last time I went looking to make a scarecrow, I stumbled on the Chimera.

Now, how do I take my style there and translate it to a more traditional ‘scarecrow’ form?

UEN Rocks!

Not only did they send us a gift, but they included a personal note, and one for each of the boys as well.

The boys were both thrilled.

From Halloween buildup 09

The Witch’s skull is coming along slowly.

This weather is not quite as warm as I’m used to for making molds, so it’s taking a bit longer than normal. HOPEFULL that we’ll have a finished mold by next weekend, and get a prototype out to mutilate into something of a final form.

Return of the Crappy Movie Friday! And other news

AMC has been all over the place lately with Crappy Movie Friday Nights.

But, looks like they’re getting back into the swing of things this weekend.

First up we have Psycho.

No, not THAT one. The REMAKE (1998).

Look, if you’re going to go remaking a CLASSIC, and you’re going to do it shot for shot, and do your best to make everything exactly the same….MAAAYBE it’s best so just leave the original alone, eh?

The cast is a bit off, and color actually detracts from the feel of the original. Could have been great…but, it’s certainly a Crappy Movie.

Then, their double feature for the evening is The Fly II.

Alec first saw the OLD school The Fly about 2 years ago. And was horrror-stricken in watching the fly creature come into being. Something amazing about that film, even with the horrendous effects.

The Remake of The Fly doesn’t quite capture that magic at any single point. Yet, the sheer horror of Jeff Goldblum’s marvelous transformation into Brundle-fly more than makes up for it, and creates a spot dear to our hearts all it’s own.

However, The Fly II…well, there is very little redeeming in this film. Just more of the same, without the acting and chemistry of the first.

For those of us here in Utah, UEN is showing….drumroll…

Mars Attacks the World!

That’s right, FLASH GORDON.

Basically the entire serial crammed into a movie. Makes it fast and fun…and oh so campy.

So, pop that corn, and join me Friday night in a crappy movie marathon.

In other news…

Got a pleasant little surprise this week.

Pumpkinrot.

I first stumbled on Pumpkinrot back in ’06 while trying to make my own couple of scarecrows to disply old masks. And was amazed at Pumpkinrot’s scarecrows.

And, his story of entering the scarecrow contest each year, only to lose to some cutesy poo creation of much lesser (imo) quality each and every year struck a chord with me. Recalling ye olde Pumpkin Carving and costume contests at school. (I’m sorry, that spider pumpkin we made, 8 legs, web, and all, was much better than the humpty dumpty that won…and those kids in the storebought boring crap were never quite as creative…)

So, I’ve made it a point to see how that contest goes for him each year, and am consistantly inspired by the fact, he’s still entering, knowing full well some cutesy thing’s going to win.

Well, a friend of mine was bumping around pumpkinrot’s blog, and apparantly he took notice of our own little setup from ’07.

Had to delay the firing of the Witch skulls.

They were a bit damp in one spot still last night. Looked good this morning, so we’ll shoot for this evening if everything goes according to plan.

I’m sure Jen will be posting over on her page about the new furniture coming today as well…

Time to clean out the garage, and get ready to build a prototype of a victim soon…

Also considering a super secret project that will work for both witches and witch doctors, doable this year…
