Grave musings.

We’ve got a lot of the Christmas makeover up.

As usual, don’t worry too much, it’s temporary.

I need some better photoshopping skills to get the new Recondite banners up to par as well.

Anyhow, it’s that time of year when I climb into a hole and start researching ideas for next year.

“Research is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought” – Albert Szent-Gyorgyi.

But, I’ll be honest. I started research early this year. Way back in September. The children have been asking for it for years. Finally, I gave in this year. They want a graveyard, fine, we’ll make a graveyard…

I don’t really have an aversion to graveyards. I just have never really seen them as ‘spooky’ or ‘creept’ or anything, really, other than a fun peaceful place to go look up names and take rubbings. As with many things, it’s all mom’s fault. Finding some headstones from a hundred years ago was just part of a normal family vacation for us. Heck, I associate graveyards much more with spring than I do Halloween as a result.

But, every year, the kids see those “halloween stones” going up at the amusement park, or around the neighborhood, and they want to do their own.

Ok. I’ll give in. Once.

So, I set out trying to find ways to put a personal spin on the graveyard scene.

I sure wasn’t going to have vampires and witches sitting in it, I needed something more unique. I wanted a Ghoul. But, no, I was not satisfied with the modern interpretations that have them hardly distinguishable from zombies. No, I wanted to look into a Ghul. They had intrigued me while listening to the History of the Calif Vathek.

Bedouin tradition holds that a Ghul is a Djinn. Created of smoke and fire, shapeshifting, dangerous. Ghuls fell into the wastes, and thus live on whatever they can find.

Just how I’m going to conjure up such imagery, I’m not entirely decided upon yet, but it sure sounds like it’s going to be fun to try.

Kyle…

Kyle’s costume has been the source of much consternation on my part.

The original plan was to have him in something of a home made ‘stalkabout’ styled costume. A moving Chimera, more or less. We had a frame all built, custom back pack, and were ready to start the puppeteering.

However, some things change, and I’m going to once again need his help with the standard operation of the yard. He can’t do that when he’s tied into a giant monstrosity.

He was, understandably, disappointed. It was shaping up to be a hell of a costume.

With Alec wanting to do Harry Potter, and Talia flipping between a “Rodeo Princess” and Sleeping Beauty, however, I do have some time to come up with something special instead of the plan B mask from last year. He’s just gotta trust me…

Now, this is NOT the standard means of accomplishing this by any stretch, but it is a cheap one.

That’s just some ‘rigid wrap’. Fairly simple and quick.

A gigantic mess later…

With the weather being lousy for the next few days, and the contest project on hold as a result, we can begin work on the nicest mask Kyle’s ever worn…

Gotta convince my wife to cast my head now.

45….

Only 45 days left.

Many fewer for me. On travel next week, perhaps another week in October…

Fortunately, there’s not a lot that I really NEED done that couldn’t wait till next year.

Working on the commission piece for Diablos Dome.

Going great. Hoping the weather holds off long enough to finish up today. (yeah right, when does weather cooperate)

All that Jute netting I bought has been real nice for building these things…

…I’m just not sure I’ll have enough left for the intented purpose I bought it for.

Vampires in the house!

Don’t know why the kids love these so much. Glad they do.

Personally, I’m hoping to find some Count Chocula….

Chimerae

We got a lot of stops and stares, honks and waves, as my neighbors found this on their way home Friday.

I’ve had to add a brace to Chimera 1’s leg. The joint proved too weak, so I made sure to reinforce the scythe as well.

But, it’s on the side opposite the audience, and it doesn’t really stand out as abnormal.

We also finally got around to doing some retrofitting.

I just love the shadows these things throw.

Chimera 1’s green light almost seems to counter firelight. It’s not just the camera, either, the illusion permeates in person as well.

Chimera 2, meanwhile seems to absorb the light.

Chimera 2 takes shape, and pumpkins.

We started making serious progress on Chimera 2.

And as we did a lighting test…well…To be perfectly honest, I’ve been struggling with Chimera 2 for some time. This and that, here and there, it just wasn’t coming out ‘right’.

Then, the boss commented that it needed another arm.

The whole idea was for this one to LACK that arm, and be more deformed. “Even things deformed have a certain symmetry”.

So, enter a smaller, secondary arm….

Loving the new burlap in case you couldn’t tell.

Need to do some retrofitting on Chimera 1 in that regard.

Hope to do some more lighting tests tonight with better light/camera.

I scarred our 3 best growing pumpkins with the kid’s names. Hidden from view, it will be a nice little surprise for them later. And, I seem to have hit the jackpot in getting some warts starting on my pumpkins…hope that continues.

This is the one that started yellow…not sure what I think of this variety…this is the only pumpkin on the vine…the temps seem too hot as the female flowers are just never opening now…

I’m hoping this conjoined sucker grows big and carve-worthy.
